Orthokeratology is an innovative form of eye care treatment. Also known as Ortho-K, this treatment uses special contact lenses to treat patients with abnormally shaped eyes. Orthokeratology offers an alternative to corrective lenses and LASIK for correcting refractive errors in your vision and improving your sight. At Cascade Eyecare in Bend, OR, our optometrist provides Ortho-K for patients. Here are some commonly asked questions about the treatment.
What Is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K is a non-surgical vision treatment designed to correct problems with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia to improve your vision. It involves wearing customized gas permeable lenses at night that gradually reshape the curvature of your eye while you are sleeping. The lenses are only worn when sleeping and are taken out when you’re awake.
Who Qualifies for Ortho-K Treatment?
Children between the ages of 8 and 12 who have problems with progressive nearsightedness are some of the best candidates for Ortho-K treatment. Ortho-K helps curtail the progression of myopia. However, teens and adults can also benefit from this treatment. After a comprehensive eye exam, our family eye doctor can determine if Ortho-K is a good fit for you.
How Does Ortho-K Work?
If our optometrist in Bend, OR qualifies you for Ortho-K, you’ll be prescribed specialized lenses suited to your visual needs. You’ll wear the lenses for one or two weeks, per instructions from our eye care specialist. The lenses work to reshape the cornea of your eye while you are sleeping to improve your sight. Our eye doctor may recommend wearing soft contacts during the day until you obtain optimal vision.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The length of treatment depends on the current state of your vision. Most people notice improvements in their sight on a daily basis and obtain optimal vision after two weeks of treatment. Our eye care specialist will keep track of your progress throughout your treatment.
How Long Do the Effects of Ortho-K Last?
The effects of Ortho-K may last a full day or may start to diminish toward the end of the day. Your visual clarity will return, however, after wearing your lenses throughout the night. As long as you continue the treatment, you will continue to enjoy good vision. Once you stop the treatment, your visual clarity will start to diminish. Eventually, it will return to its former state. Ortho-K effects are not permanent.
